Hi, it’s nice to meet you!
Why I created Littles for Literacy
As parents, we know we advocate for our children but we also have the POWER to to teach. It is our duty and responsibility to teach safety, manners, self reliance and social skills but we MUST realize we have the responsibility and power to be our child’s first teacher to insure their foundation in reading success.
I Thought My Child Was Showing Great Success In Kindergarten…It appeared to me that she was thriving. I now realize the euphemisms that were showered on me went right over my head:
“Reading skills are developmental.. She’ll get it eventually.”
“She’s young for her class……maturity will make it all come together, you’ll see.”
By third grade I heard, “Her spelling is so cute…..she spells ‘couple’ like ‘cobble.'” I heard that spelling wasn’t important…..we have spell check. I hired a reading interventionist who took her right back to the pre-reading skills she had missed.
And I went back to school to learn how to teach early reading skills. I was a 8th grade English teacher, and I had no idea how to help my own child. Littles for Literacy was born out of a need to help other parents learn the same things I learned.
